Dr. Brad H. Rovin, MD, FACP, FASN is Professor of Medicine and Pathology at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. He is the Director of the Division of Nephrology, and had been the Director of the Fellowship Program in Nephrology at Ohio State for the last 6 years. He has recently been named Vice Chairman of Research for Internal Medicine. Dr. Rovin has been at Ohio State University for over 20 years, and has been recognized by Best Doctors® for his work in the area of glomerular diseases.
Dr. Rovin received his bachelor of science in chemical engineering from Northwestern University, followed by his doctor of medicine from the University Of Illinois College Of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, and a fellowship in nephrology at Washington University.
Dr. Rovin’s research interests include the pathogenesis of kidney inflammation. He has studied the molecular regulation and expression of chemokines in the kidney during glomerulonephritis. He has applied these findings to the study of kidney injury in patients with lupus nephritis. He and his colleagues at Ohio State have followed a large cohort of SLE patients prospectively in the Ohio SLE Study, and have investigated the genetic and environmental factors responsible for lupus flares. His current research focuses on biomarker discovery in an effort to predict future renal lupus flares and initiate treatment earlier to avoid permanent kidney damage. He is also involved in most of the major clinical trials testing new therapies for SLE nephritis. |

As Medical Director of the Mayo Renal Function Laboratory, Dr. Lieske has also spearheaded translational studies regarding the precise methods to measure kidney function using established and newer candidate biomarkers (e.g., cystatin C, NGAL). His team has lead efforts to develop tandem mass spectrometry assays for urinary biomarkers in the lab. These efforts have produced a reference measurements procedure for urine albumin which is being used in a collaborative international study designed to standardize measurement of this key urinary analyte.

Deborah

PhD
in Nutrition from the University of Georgia
Postdoctoral education at the University of
Cincinnati - EUA
|
Professional Experience :
The over-arching goal my research is to
understand the impact of nutrients and hormones
on energy homeostasis, metabolic function,
the metabolic syndrome and adipose tissue
distribution. My expertise in nutrient regulation
of metabolic disease resulted from my early
career as a Nutritionist where I counseled
and provided nutritional recommendations
to patients with a variety of metabolic
complications. Over the last 14 years, I
have focused on understanding the metabolic
pathways that are influenced by nutrients.
I obtained my PhD in Nutrition from the
University of Georgia where my training
and research was focused in basic sciences
by targeting the molecular and cellular
pathways involved in metabolism. During
my postdoctoral education at the University
of Cincinnati, I obtained strong guidance
in intermediary metabolism, and my research
focused on the consequences of impaired
metabolism to energy homeostasis. I mastered
techniques to evaluate physiology in cells
and whole animals. As an Assistant Professor
at the University of Cincinnati, I applied
this expertise in physiology where I established
methods to interrogate novel aspects of
nutrients and their impact on metabolism.
New principles emerging from this work suggest
that specific metabolic pathways are influenced
by nutrients and hormones which influence
the development of adipose tissue function
and metabolism. In April, 2008 I joined
the faculty at University of Texas Southwestern
Medical Center where I have established
my independent laboratory and recruited
postdoctoral fellows who currently work
with my lab’s four research technicians
where we have continued to obtain funding
and publish our findings with respect to
how nutrients and hormones influence metabolism.
